Places That Make the 801

Salt Lake City, Utah
Salt Lake City has its own rhythm.
You find it in the places that have stayed independent. The storefronts where people gather. The rooms where records are played, walls are painted, tattoos are made, food is served, and ideas move from one person to another.
Long before 801 MADE, there was already an 801 culture.
For our first Founding List, we wanted to recognize eight places that represent different parts of that culture.
Not a ranking or a popularity contest.
Just a point of view from two people who have spent years making, building, and participating in Salt Lake City's creative community.
Big Deluxe Tattoo
For the ink.
A place where personal expression becomes permanent. Big Deluxe represents the independent, self-directed character that has always been part of Salt Lake's creative scene.
Crown Burger
For the hunger.
Some places become part of a city's vocabulary simply because generations of people keep going back. Crown Burger represents the everyday side of the 801—the places that become part of local identity.
FICE Gallery
For the culture.
FICE represents the intersection of art, design, fashion, and community. It reflects a Salt Lake City that creates its own visual language.
Kyoto Matcha Cafe
For the ritual.
Culture isn't always loud. Sometimes it's the places that create a moment to slow down, meet someone, and make a routine feel meaningful.
Raunch Records & Skate
For the streets.
Music and skate culture have always been connected to the independent spirit of the city. Raunch represents that intersection: records, boards, community, and the streets.
Randy's Records
For the records.
Record stores are more than retail. They are archives of taste, discovery, conversation, and local memory. Randy's is part of that history.
The Heavy Metal Shop
For the noise.
A city needs places where people can be unapologetically themselves. The Heavy Metal Shop represents the louder, heavier side of Salt Lake's cultural identity.
Uprok
For the walls.
Graffiti and street art are part of the visual language of the 801. Uprok represents the artists, writers, and people who helped bring that language into public view.
THE FIRST 8 is our first attempt to document a small part of that culture.
There are obviously more than eight places that matter.
That's the point.
This is the first list—not the last.
801 MADE was created around a simple idea:
Salt Lake City doesn't need to borrow its identity.
It already has one.
The 801 is made by its artists, musicians, designers, skaters, chefs, makers, entrepreneurs, businesses, neighborhoods, and communities.
We're simply putting a flag in the ground.
THE FIRST 8 is our founding list.
Eight places.
Eight pieces of the city.
One 801.
